We’re getting closer to figuring out which two teams will compete at the Grand Finals for the league championship in Philadelphia on Sept. 29. Heading into the final matches of the 2019 Overwatch League playoffs this week, here are the storylines we’re watching:
Feeling the Heat
After defeating the Excelsior twice during the regular season, the Reign were bounced out of the winner’s bracket by a focused New York team that was prepared and on point with several clever strategies. Meanwhile, after losing their opening match to the Gladiators, the Spark have been surviving just fine in the loser’s bracket, most recently sending the Dynasty home for the season. This elimination match between Atlanta and Hangzhou should be a spicy affair.

After a stunning loss to the Reign and a dominant win over the defending champion Spitfire, the Shock are in a win-or-go-home match against the Gladiators. San Francisco had the second-best record this season and boasts the 2019 league MVP—but none of that matters if they can’t win Thursday night. The Gladiators, coming off a tough loss to the Titans, remain a confident and collected group. The pride of the Golden State is on the line.

Clash of the Division Champs
Pacific vs. Atlantic. One-seed vs. two-seed. Titans vs. Excelsior. Vancouver has tinkered with their lineup in the playoffs, but with relatively smooth victories over the Dynasty and Gladiators, the results look the same. New York is on a mission to prove they aren’t postseason pushovers, and with wins against the Spitfire and Reign they’re making a strong case. This isn’t an elimination match—the defeated has one more shot in the loser’s bracket, but the winner goes straight into the Grand Finals, so the stakes couldn’t be higher.
